Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie (PTUK) and Tulkarm Municipality have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at developing and strengthening students’ capacities through the implementation of applied student projects in real working environments.
The agreement seeks to serve the local community and promote the practical use of academic knowledge in addressing municipal needs and improving services provided to citizens.
The signing ceremony was attended by Prof. Hussein Shanak, President of PTUK, and Dr. Riyad Awad, Mayor of Tulkarm, along with representatives from both the university and the municipality.
Under the agreement, the university will nominate 15 male and female students based on approved academic criteria. In return, Tulkarm Municipality will award participating students an officially recognized certificate of experience equivalent to 160 training hours, enabling them to gain hands-on experience through projects that serve the local community and enhance their specialized skills.
Prof. Shanak stated that the agreement aligns with the university’s vision of investing in students’ scientific and intellectual potential and strengthening their engagement in community service by linking academic disciplines with the needs of local institutions, particularly in the fields of computer science, data analysis, and digital technologies.
He emphasized that such community partnerships reflect the university’s core mission of developing students’ knowledge and skills and enabling them to apply their learning in real-world contexts, especially within municipalities that provide services to all segments of society.
He further noted that PTUK has been proactive in launching specializations in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, recognizing their growing importance and global impact, and in preparing graduates with competitive skills that meet both community and labor market needs.
For his part, Dr. Riyad Awad praised the academic and professional caliber of PTUK students and underscored the importance of such agreements in enhancing joint work and improving municipal services by benefiting from students’ skills and innovative ideas.
He affirmed that Tulkarm Municipality considers the university a key and permanent partner across various scientific and community fields, describing the agreement as a practical model of integration between academic institutions and local authorities in serving society.
This agreement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic–community cooperation, bridge theory and practice, and enable students of the College of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence to implement applied graduation projects that contribute to the development of municipal work and address local community needs.
