PTUK Receives Civil Defense Equipment to Maintain Volunteerism and Safety

Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie received a set of essential equipment and supplies provided by the Palestinian Civil Defense to support volunteer activities related to fire suppression, rescue and search operations, first aid, and the evacuation of injured persons.

The equipment will enhance the readiness of student volunteers and contribute to improving safety and emergency preparedness within the University community.

The equipment was handed over following a meeting between the University administration and the Director of Civil Defense in Tulkarm Governorate, Lt. Col. Islam Nazzal, attended by University President Prof. Hussein Shanak, his deputies, representatives from the Deanship of Development and Community Service, and the Department of Public Relations and Media. Also present were Lt. Col. Eng. Neam Al-Shami, Director of the Volunteers Department, and Lt. Col. Rami Al-Suweis, Director of the Fire and Rescue Center in Tulkarm.

The initiative is the result of ongoing coordination between the Civil Defense and the University’s Deanship of Development and Community Service, aimed at promoting a culture of volunteerism and strengthening the University’s preparedness to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters, thereby enhancing the safety of students and staff.

Prof. Shanak emphasized that volunteerism represents a core principle within the University’s activities and programs. He noted that the University seeks to institutionalize volunteer work through coordination between the Volunteer Committee and the Public Safety Committee to improve students’ readiness in dealing with risks and emergency situations. He also highlighted the importance of conducting training workshops for student volunteers to familiarize them with safety equipment and emergency response procedures.

He further pointed out that the University offers a specialized program in Public Safety Engineering, which contributes to preparing qualified professionals equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to serve society in the fields of prevention and disaster response, thereby strengthening safety within the campus environment.

For his part, Lt. Col. Nazzal underscored the importance of cooperation with the University in advancing both educational and practical aspects of public safety and volunteer work. He noted that such collaboration helps promote a culture of prevention and emergency preparedness among students and enhances their ability to contribute to protecting the university community during crises and disasters.

Both sides also discussed the possibility of introducing an elective course in public safety for students, particularly within the Faculty of Engineering, as well as the broader importance of encouraging educational and governmental institutions to integrate public safety specializations into their institutional frameworks.

The delivered equipment includes a range of field tools and supplies used in rescue, firefighting, and emergency response operations, such as rescue stretchers, first aid kits, lighting equipment, foldable ladders, manual rescue tools and saws, towing ropes, volunteer protective clothing, and additional firefighting and safety equipment to support training and emergency preparedness within the University.
