Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie (PTUK), represented by its President, Prof. Hussein Shanak, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority, represented by its Chairman, Eng. Ayman Ismail, in alignment with national efforts to promote sustainability and expand reliance on renewable energy sources.
The MoU aims to strengthen institutional collaboration and broaden avenues for joint cooperation through a structured framework encompassing the exchange of technical and scientific expertise, the implementation of training and capacity-building programs for students, graduates, and staff, and the support of applied research and joint projects in energy management and efficiency.
In parallel with the agreement, the Energy Authority awarded PTUK a grant to implement a 250 kW solar energy system equipped with storage facilities on campus, supported by the World Bank. The project is expected to reduce electricity costs, enhance energy efficiency, and increase reliance on clean and renewable energy sources within the university.
The initiative will also serve as a practical training platform, enabling students to develop hands-on skills and strengthening the alignment between academic outputs and labor market demands, while transforming the campus into a model for sustainable and green energy applications.
Prof. Shanak emphasized that this step reflects the University’s commitment to its national role in advancing sustainable energy solutions, noting that the project contributes to modernizing infrastructure and integrating advanced technologies into education and research. He added that PTUK will continue adopting innovative and sustainable approaches while expanding strategic partnerships to support development and community service.
Eng. Ismail highlighted that the agreement aligns with the government’s strategy to expand renewable energy use and enhance energy security, stressing that investment in solar energy is essential to reducing financial burdens, particularly in the education sector. He also underscored the importance of collaboration with higher education institutions in raising awareness and preparing qualified national cadres in the energy field.
The MoU is valid for three years, renewable, and forms part of broader national efforts to promote renewable energy adoption and improve energy efficiency across sectors in support of sustainable development.
