PTUK Holds Specialized Workshop to Bridge Industry with Academia

PTUK organized a specialized workshop under the Erasmus+–funded SERMED Project, aiming to enhance education and research in sustainable energy and mechatronics, and to align them with labor-market needs. The workshop, titled “Bridging the Gap Between Industry and Academia,” was held under the supervision of the College of Engineering, with the participation of university staff and partners from higher-education institutions and the industrial sector.

Representing the University President, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Moatassem Al-Khatib opened the workshop, emphasizing the importance of such projects in developing academic programs and expanding international partnerships, contributing to student capacity-building and strengthening the university’s leadership in technical and engineering fields.

The opening session also featured Prof. Catuscia Scibre from Sapienza University of Rome and PTUK SERMED Coordinator Prof. Samer Al-Saadi, who delivered an extensive presentation outlining the project’s objectives and components. Al-Saadi noted that the workshop constitutes a key step toward understanding the real needs of the industrial sector and enhancing alignment between educational outcomes and labor-market skills.

He added that the project provides an advanced learning platform enabling students to access virtual laboratories and practical training materials, improving their professional readiness and strengthening academic–industrial integration.

Welcoming the guests, Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Jaafar Al-Masri highlighted the workshop as an interactive space to discuss technical challenges in the energy sector and to support the development of engineering programs that keep pace with global advancements. He added that the College continuously builds effective partnerships with local industries to ensure that student competencies match market requirements.

The project also seeks to equip students with modern scientific and technical skills through open educational resources, virtual lab experiences, and field-based training.

The workshop included two main sessions. The first, titled “The Academic Perspective,” explored ways to strengthen collaboration between universities and the industrial sector with the participation of Prof. Tamer Al-Khatib An-Najah National University, Dr. Osama Al-Omari Arab American University, and Prof. Sameer Khader Palestine Polytechnic University.

The second session, titled “Energy Challenges and Industrial Needs,” featured representatives from electricity and renewable-energy companies, including Eng. Mohammad Hanaiysha Qabatiya Electricity, Eng. Omar Mahmoud Tubas Electricity, Eng. Musab Hamad, and Eng. Ahmad Balbisi from the private sector, who reviewed technical challenges and discussed potential joint solutions to meet industrial demands.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion on strengthening the linkage between engineering-program outcomes and labor-market requirements, and on activating the SERMED platform for training and development.

Participants agreed on follow-up mechanisms to implement the project and expand cooperation with partners in vocational training and applied research, thereby enhancing students’ technical competencies and supporting the university’s competitiveness in engineering and scientific fields.
